Art by a Genius

My favorite 3 year old (not to be confused with my favorite 4 year old and my favorite less-than-one year old) drew me this picture. It’s a drum set with a high hat. Can’t you tell? It’s beautiful.

The best part is the little smudge where I think he drooled on it. He’s only 3 years old! He drools when he concentrates really hard, like when he thinks about me and our future together watching The Upside Down Show. Loves it.

Patterns By Gen

This image is really big. But I love it so much. I gave Gen a leftover buck slip and this is what she came up with. See, this is what I like about art: it’s when it comes from unexpected places. The best art are from those who don’t say they can draw; they just create designs with their own style.

Gen is also married to a sculptor and is surrounded by some of the most artistic people ever, so she’s probably an amazing drawer and just doesn’t tell me about it.

Yarn Wars

My friend Mandy is a brilliant artist and posted these photographs of Star Wars characters MADE OUT OF YARN for the art show, Stitch Wars. AMAZING!

I really want one of a Sarlacc Pit.

WOW Gallery

New art show at the World of Wonder Storefont Gallery. Taken last night after a really, really, really long day. I think these three are the best pieces in the show.

Btw, my friends started a Century City version of “Overheard In New York.” Hi-larious. Please read it here.

Snap Fish

Sometimes I see a lot of horrible photography where people take macro shots of flower petals and stroke their own ego on how amazingly talented they are. And then there are those photographers who have no clue what contrast or white balance is.

And then there are friends who are lucky enough to travel the world and also pick up photography as a latent hobby with a fancy camera, and uploading pictures from their travel every once in a while, so you can check on their progress and writhe in jealousy as you sit in your office cubicle.

I have one friend like that, and each time he puts up more photos from random spots around the world (in this case, Tokyo), I just have to calm myself so I don’t jump out the window. Or something like that.

I’m not a very good writer when it comes to art, but honestly, there’s something about Ken’s photos that make me really happy. I think he has a really good eye in capturing moments that somehow bend reality but without making the scene look impossible or crazy or weird. I can’t explain it.

Plus, anyone who appreciates some solidly yummy ramen and takes photos of it wins a star sticker in my book.

Yes, I do have a book. Filled with star stickers.

It’s just in my head.

This specific post is about 8 days too late. My excuse? Life just keeps up with the craziness, even after you kinda-sorta finish up one big project.

Like, I would have totally written this if I had time last Saturday, but instead I had to get back to the gallery and clean up all the empty plastic cups from the night before (free drinks, yay!). Then I had to hurry up and practice for the Rock Band Charity Tournament, both alone, then with Morg (our vocalist), and then with Steve (our lead guitarist) before heading down to Chinatown to totally kick nerd ass. Why Rock Band Charity Tournament? I have no idea. It definitely wasn’t for the charity but it was one of those things that we all talk about doing as a joke and then Steve was like, wtf, let’s just do this anyway (or something like that).

We came in third place, but I like to think we came in FIRST because what the hell, people, we were the ONL BAND to make it to the final finals with a hardworking singer. Not singing in RB counts as cheating, because everyone and their grandmas can play the friggin instruments.

Anyway, then I had to go back to work and be slaves, 8:45am-7:00pm, Mon-Fri and then sleep in between, and then some other stuff, so FINALLY today I can write this post.

Here’s the thing, though. I parked on the street outside and I only had like a dollar in change, so I technically only have 15 minutes to write this up. I’ll be really fast, I promise, cause I do NOT want a parking ticket. That would like ruin my life FOREVER.

So THANK YOU to all the friends and artists and co-workers (who are friends anyway) and strangers off the street that we managed to steal $5 from who came to the CRAZIANS! opening night! I like to think it was a success, if a little busy and intimidating and I didn’t get to talk or meet everything that I wanted to, but that’s okay, right? Anyway, I’m so glad people came and I hope everyone had a blast.

If you missed out, then you’re dead to me. Just kidding. Please come check out the show, as it runs until August 8th and then all the art will be taken down forever. Or let me know if you want to check it out with MEEE cause I’ve got secret keys to the gallery and can open it up whenever I want. Cause I’m cool like that.

Oh shit, I think my 15 minutes are almost up but a bunch of people just wandered into the gallery.

Steven snapped this shot of me last night while we were finishing up the “not quite there yet but too damned tired to do anything else” part of the CRAZIANS! show.

We already sold three pieces and the show hasn’t even officially opened yet!

Please come by if you’re around Hollywood tonight!

World of Wonder Storefront Gallery

6650 Hollywood Blvd

8:00pm – 12:00am

I’m really excited. I’m also really nervous that I feel like I have to poop. Yeah, I said it.

I’ve got most of the art in for our CRAZIANS! show! Artist John Lee is sending over two framed prints, as well as extra prints, all for sale, and I can’t wait to see them in person.

Plus, I just bought 50 giant Chinese paper lanterns to make some sort of window display. Ahhh stress stress stress!

Me @ 16

Thanks to MRod, I found out about a meme that has been going around where you draw yourself at age 16. Of course, most of the people who participated (and are participating, since I think it’s still going on) are talented artists who know how to draw.

Unfortunately, everything I know how to draw looks like a Sanrio character but I REALLY WANTED TO TRY THIS!!! AHHH!

So here you go. Please view this knowing the following:

  1. I am a horrible drawer
  2. I don’t really know what I look like. No, really, I don’t. I mean, I can point myself out in photographs but only because I’m either usually the only Asian girl in the photo, or the only Asian in the photo, or the only hideous one. Just kidding. But seriously, I could blabber away and interact with the entire world and totally get surprised when I see my face in the mirror. Is that weird?
  3. B inked this.
  4. I am wearing my school uniform because at age 16, that’s what I wore 5 days out of the week.
  5. I was pretty boring, eh?
