I guess there’s a positive side to all the horrible traffic around Los Angeles. I mean, you really get to notice the details in your surroundings without having to walk around. Right?

Usually these details include trash on the street, or some guy running like a total girl down the sidewalk (HI-LARIOUS. You had to have been there!) and very occasionally, a homeless guy jerking off in his sleeping bag. Actually, let’s be realistic. Those latter incidents are more like me thinking a homeless guy is doing a weird hand dance inside his sleeping bag, then Brandon points out that it’s more perverted than that, and I feel completely grossed out and dirty.

Right. Back to the subject at hand.

This past weekend, I noticed that either the city or maybe a cool hipster artist has been wrapping the traffic signal control boxes along the sidewalks with giant photographs of that street, rendering them almost invisible. It’s pretty trippy when you first glance at it, and realize that something is off. These photos were taking off of Hollywood Blvd, but I saw another one near the Scientology building off of Fountain Ave.

Does anyone know who’s responsible for this?

Yeah, what’s going on??? Whoa, this wordpress interface looks different.

NOTHING IS GOING ON. Aside from work but I don’t want to talk about that.

Wait, one thing is going on. I’m guest-curating an art show at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery for this coming July (yes, the one with the Britney vagina painting), and of course, the theme has to do with Asian people. Apparently I am the only Asian person they know, so I’m perfect for the job.

For reals, though, I’m really excited about the opportunity because for one thing, I know NOTHING about art except that I know that I like it when I see it. I also hate museums, so any time you can see art out in the open or maybe in the space of what used to be a sex shop along Hollywood Blvd, I like. Also, there’s an unbelievable crowd of talent out there in the Asian American community, which doesn’t surprise me because if there’s one good thing we are good at (besides math and Hello Kitty), it is art.

I think I’m jinxing myself by writing about this on here, because now I’m not going to get any artists to participate.

But I did trick one person, Dave Chung, to submit his art and I am SO EXCITED. PANDA BEARS AND TOILET PAPER YEAH.

So keep July 2008 open for this show. No, really. I mean it. The whole month.

Check out this super cool video of comic book artist Pat Lee drawing for a live comic-art show in Hong Kong, in collaboration with the opening of a Diesel store.

Let me just say that I’m JEALOUS. I’ve always want to learn how to easily freehand such amazing looking art, and I can’t imagine how hard it must be to draw such a studly six pack like Batman’s. For real, though. I’m sure there are specific style guidelines that comic artists must follow to create their look, like the shading, the body proportions, the flow–all down with markers and spray cans! WTF CRAZY.

Dude, if I tried that, all of my pictures end up lopsided or Down Syndrome-esque.

More pictures are on Hong Kong Hustle’s blog so please check it out.

lacma-lights.jpg

I usually drive by LACMA on my way to work, and for the past couple of months, I’ve been watching the super annoying and frustrating construction that’s been going on along Wilshire Blvd, because they like to shut down one of the lanes during rush hour traffic so the construction guys can park their cars on the street (I SWEAR. I cannot see any other purpose this serves, except to jam up the morning traffic even more for shits and giggles.).

I’ve also noticed the above rows of street lamps, and I honestly thought they were just lined up and awaiting installation. Like, you know, so they were going to be placed around the LACMA building and park to light up the paths. No, really, wouldn’t that make sense? I mean, yeah, the Victorian-esque design of the street lamps didn’t quite match the contemporary marble/stucco (is it stucco? I don’t know shit about architecture.) look of the two main buildings. And the lamps don’t really go with the tar pits but whatevs, they’re just lamps.

Turns out I was completely wrong. I guess it’s an art installation by Chris Burden, called “Urban Light” (real creative title there, fellow. Why not just call it “Street Lamp Light”? Yeah, I said it.) and the lamps will be lit from dusk until midnight. What does this mean? I don’t know, but it’s just as annoying as encasing growing plants in concrete.

Let me coin a new term for this: W.O.E. Waste of energy. And it’s going to be a headache to drive by at night with all the glare.

Well, don’t I sound like a curmudgeon.
