tangerine

The city has been battered with some crazy rainstorms lately, which I find really exciting as it’s rare we get any interesting weather that allows me to put my weatherproof boots to full use. The only sad part is that I spend most of my day inside, far away from any windows so I miss out on all the heavy rain/hail action. I even asked my boss for a window and all he sent me was this.

I got to experience my own personal storm this morning when I noticed that the tangerines on my parent’s trees were ripe. For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to pick some for a morning snack, forgetting that shaking a bunch of tree branches after a storm would be a bad idea. Conclusion: I got my hands on a bunch of adorable tangerines and became drenched with leftover raindrops from the leaves. Fun times!

The reward wasn’t that sweet either. My mom only juices these tangerines for a reason: they’re filled with seeds and are so [amazingly] sour. Oh well. So goes the story of my life.

Tangerine

I always think it’s weird that the tangerine season is in winter, because I always assume that all the plants and trees are hibernating or dying at that time. You know what? I could totally be wrong and maybe my trees are just messed up, but every winter, we’ve been getting a bigger and bigger crop of tangerines.

The yummiest ones are always at the very top, but yesterday I picked what I could with our little latter ladder. I managed to fill a whole BUCKET full of tangerines, which we used half for the most delicious juice ever (it’s like drinking liquid Sour Patch Kids cause the fruit is so juicy and tangy) and a little bit for homemade tangerine ice cream (which we’re going to eat tonight!!) and maybe even a tangerine pie?

Does anyone else have tangerine ideas? They’re defnitely too sour and filled with seeds for plain eating. Hmm…tangerine turnovers? Tangerine marmalade? Tangerine soup?
